This outdoor via cordata experience is not a fun or recreational route. The Mainmorte via cordata, which we call “La Grande Aventure,” has nothing to do with the Grand Canyon via cordata route (“Le Trou du Renard”). You are committing to a true vertical adventure… you know when it starts, but never exactly when it ends.

This route is divided into two distinct sections. The first part involves descending into the Mainmorte ravine through a series of abseils and rope descents (around 2h30). The second part is a very aerial and exposed via cordata route overlooking the Verdon river (around 2 hours, but it can take longer).

Who is it for?

This activity is reserved for people in very good physical condition and who are not afraid of heights. It is intense and sporty, combining dry canyoning and via cordata. No prior via or climbing experience is required: beginners are welcome, but you must be able to sustain physical effort over several hours.

When?

This via cordata is available from April to September. If you are looking for a more accessible and playful experience, we recommend our half-day via ferrata / via cordata route in the Grand Canyon of the Verdon.

Where?

The Mainmorte via cordata is located in the Verdon Regional Natural Park, in the heart of the Grand Canyon, near the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department).

If you wish to discover other adventures in the Verdon, several complementary routes are available to you. For a first experience at height, the Grand Canyon via ferrata allows you to enjoy a fun and aerial route offering spectacular panoramic views of the gorges. Enthusiasts of water activities can turn to the Clue du Riolan, an essential canyon renowned for its crystal-clear waters, jumps, and fun passages. Finally, for practitioners seeking another great day of sport, the Torrent de la Lance in the Upper Verdon offers a challenging course combining abseils, natural obstacles, and a wild atmosphere.

Complete description of the activity in the Via Ferrata La Grande Aventure:

You will meet your state-certified instructor in the center of La Palud sur Verdon, a charming little village nestled in the heart of the Verdon Gorges and the Verdon Regional Natural Park, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. It is located approximately 40 minutes from Castellane (Gorges road D956 towards Moustiers-Sainte-Marie), a highly popular destination for all outdoor activities and white-water sports in the Verdon Gorges (hiking, canoeing-kayaking, rafting, water trekking, stand-up paddling, swimming in lakes, etc.).

After meeting your instructor at the meeting point, you will follow him with your vehicle for a few kilometers to the starting parking lot of this outdoor activity.

Your instructor will provide you with all the necessary equipment for this activity (harness equipped with lanyards with automatic carabiners, descender, helmet). Your part is to bring a good pair of trainers, sports clothing (clothes you feel comfortable in), a backpack, a snack, and a bottle of water.

You will begin with a walk of approximately twenty minutes, downhill. Upon arrival at the start of the course, your instructor will give you the safety instructions to follow throughout this thrill-filled adventure!

You will start with a sequence of two abseils of approximately 20 meters high, which will mark the entrance into the Main Morte ravine, a superb limestone fissure leading to the Verdon Grand Canyon and its iconic cliffs.

At least two hours will be needed to traverse this dry, deeply enclosed and winding canyon, where water has left its mark and sculpted the rock for our greatest pleasure. On the agenda: rope descents, hiking, and numerous abseils, within a preserved and wild natural site of the Verdon Gorges.

Upon reaching the confluence of the Verdon River, the descent will be finished, and the ascent via via cordata will begin. This is when the great adventure truly starts!! It is very difficult to give a precise activity time for this second part...it will depend on you. A system of handholds (ropes in place, fixed to the cliff) will allow you to climb an elevation gain of approximately 300 meters, with very (very) aerial passages, offering you a unique and grandiose view of the Verdon Grand Canyon: thrill-seekers and adrenaline enthusiasts will be satisfied!
