Canyoning near Nice in the Riolan Canyon
Full-day canyoning trip, located about 1 hour from Castellane.
The Riolan canyoning route is considered one of the most beautiful in France. Its breathtaking scenery and natural beauty are truly outstanding. Crystal-clear turquoise waters flow through towering white limestone cliffs, creating a spectacular natural setting.
This full-day outdoor adventure is accessible to all levels (beginners, intermediates, and experienced canyoners). However, as this is a very aquatic canyon (swimming ability is essential) and the descent must be completed in full (no escape routes are possible), a good level of physical fitness is required to fully enjoy this thrilling experience.
This does not mean you need to be a high-level athlete, but simply to engage in regular physical activity.

Full activity description – Riolan Canyon
When you book your canyoning trip, we will provide you with detailed directions to reach the meeting point parking area, located between the villages of Sigale and Aiglun (please note: there is another village named Aiglun in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, department 04). From Castellane (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence), the drive takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Castellane is a typical Provençal village widely known for outdoor activities and white-water sports in the Verdon Gorges (hiking, climbing, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, aquatic trekking, stand-up paddle, and lake swimming).
From the meeting point, your state-certified instructor will organise a vehicle shuttle with the group, allowing you to return easily to your cars at the end of the canyon descent. Your car keys will be kept safe and dry throughout the activity.
Your guide will provide all the necessary technical equipment for safe canyoning. This includes a full neoprene wetsuit (jacket and trousers), neoprene socks, a helmet, a harness equipped with safety lanyards, as well as a waterproof kit containing a dry bag and a sealed barrel to carry your personal belongings and picnic. You must bring your own swimsuit or swim shorts and a pair of sports shoes, which you will wear throughout the activity. Suitable canyoning footwear must be closed sports shoes with a non-slip, fairly rigid sole. For this full-day adventure, you should also bring water and a picnic.
The experience begins with a short 10-minute approach walk from the road down to the river, followed by another 10-minute progression in the water leading to the start of this fun and aquatic canyon.
The descent starts with walking in the river, allowing you to get used to the environment and test your footing on wet rocks.
You will then reach the entrance of the narrow section of the Riolan Canyon, and after the first abseil of approximately 8 metres, there are no escape routes possible until the end of the route.
From there, you will progress through a sequence of turquoise-water jumps, natural slides, and abseils, in an exceptional natural setting. Thrill-seekers will enjoy the adrenaline-filled obstacles, while more cautious participants can still fully enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. Jumps range from 2 to 8 metres, with those above 3 metres being optional. The slides are impressive, aquatic, and very playful, with heights of up to 8 metres—guaranteed sensations!
After around 2.5 hours of canyoning, the gorge opens into a large sunny rock amphitheatre where you can stop for a picnic. This break offers the chance to fully appreciate the spectacular scenery, surrounded by towering cliffs over 100 metres high.
The second part of the Riolan is just as impressive as the first. Although shorter in duration, it remains intense and dynamic, with additional jumps into crystal-clear pools, exciting slides, and technical abseils.
The final section features a long narrow gorge where sunlight enhances the striking contrasts between turquoise water and vertical limestone walls. The exit is located at the Riolan Bridge, where your vehicles were left in the morning thanks to the shuttle system. This marks the end of your canyoning adventure in this preserved natural site of the Nice hinterland.
If your accommodation is located near Lake Sainte-Croix or the Grand Canyon of the Verdon (Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, La Palud-sur-Verdon, Les Salles-sur-Verdon, Bauduen, etc.) and the travel time feels too long, feel free to contact us to discuss alternative options. Depending on water conditions and levels, we offer canyoning trips across the entire PACA region, from the Verdon Gorges and Lake Sainte-Croix to the Upper Verdon Valley, as well as from the Côte d’Azur to the Var, including the Vésubie and Tinée valleys.
