The Mainmorte canyoning route is an exceptional and majestic canyon, located in the heart of the Grand Canyon of the Verdon, within the Verdon Regional Natural Park: a winding and impressive limestone fault that leads directly into the Verdon River.

This descent is one of the most sporty itineraries we offer. It is reserved for a very athletic public, comfortable in water and not prone to vertigo. This full-day outdoor activity is composed of two distinct sections:

A first dry section, where you descend into a striking limestone gorge via rope techniques (abseils, handlines, etc.), followed by a second aquatic section where you follow the Verdon River up to a very famous area of the gorges: the Imbut. You then complete a very physical and exposed return hike to reach the vehicles, offering breathtaking views over the Verdon Gorges. Even beginners may participate, provided they are very physically active and not affected by vertigo.

Who is it for?

The Mainmorte canyon is intended for already sporty participants, comfortable in vertical and aquatic environments. It requires good physical fitness and is not suitable for people sensitive to heights, with technical abseils that can be impressive.

If you are looking for a more accessible and playful descent, we recommend the Clue du Riolan, a more aquatic and progressive canyon, ideal for a sporty introductory day in the Alpes-Maritimes.

When?

This canyoning route depends on the EDF dam that regulates the Verdon River and can only be done when it is closed (please contact us for the schedule).

Where?

The Mainmorte canyon is located near the small village of La Palud-sur-Verdon, in the heart of the Verdon Gorges and the Grand Canyon, between Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie (about 45 minutes from Castellane), in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department.

Full description of the Mainmorte canyoning activity:

When you book, we will provide the meeting point itinerary, located in the center of the small village of La Palud-sur-Verdon, in the heart of the Verdon. From Castellane (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence), it takes about 45 minutes by car. Castellane is a popular Provençal village known for outdoor and whitewater activities such as hiking, climbing, kayaking, rafting, canyoning, and swimming in lakes.

After meeting your guide, you will follow them with your own vehicle for a few kilometers to the canyon parking area. Your certified instructor will then provide all the specific equipment required for safe canyoning: a full neoprene wetsuit (top and bottom), neoprene socks, a harness equipped with a double safety lanyard and descender, a helmet, and a kit including a backpack and waterproof barrel to carry your personal belongings and picnic.

On your side, you should bring a swimsuit or swim shorts, light clothing for the dry section and return hike, and suitable sports shoes. Canyoning shoes must be closed-toe sports shoes with a sole that is neither too soft nor too smooth. For this full-day aquatic and playful outing, you should also bring a picnic (plus an extra snack) and at least 1.5 liters of water per person.

To take part in this outdoor activity, you must be in excellent physical condition, comfortable in water, and not prone to vertigo (a mandatory 50-meter abseil). Being a beginner is not an issue, but the vertical and aquatic nature of this route makes Mainmorte a demanding canyon, and the long return hike adds significant physical and mental difficulty.

After a short approach hike of about 15 minutes, your certified guide will provide all safety instructions to ensure the day runs smoothly and remains an unforgettable experience.

The canyon begins with a walk along the bottom of the ravine, followed by two abseils of around 20 meters, marking the entrance into the Mainmorte ravine, a stunning limestone gorge leading towards the Grand Canyon of the Verdon and its iconic cliffs.

About two and a half hours are needed to complete the dry section of the canyon, which is narrow and winding, shaped by water erosion over time. Around ten abseils and rope descents ranging from 5 to 25 meters take place in a wild and preserved natural environment. The final abseil is a highlight: a 50-meter descent in free-hanging style, allowing access to the riverbed of the Verdon, marking the end of the canyon section. The setting is breathtaking, where towering cliffs meet the emerald waters of the river.

A picnic break takes place in this exceptional environment before starting the aquatic section.

After putting on neoprene wetsuits, you will descend the Grand Canyon of the Verdon for nearly 3 km in clear and stunning waters. During this aquatic progression, several optional jumps from 2 to 8 meters may be offered.

You will then reach the famous Imbut, a legendary site in the Verdon gorges, where massive rock formations partially cover the river, making it disappear underground for about 100 meters. A spectacular natural phenomenon experienced from the inside.

The adventure then continues, but the canyon is not yet finished: you must exit the Grand Canyon via a steep and exposed trail for about 1 hour. Some sections are airy and require good physical condition and no fear of heights. You will then reach the ridge road, where your vehicles are located after an additional 15-minute walk. From there, you can admire a 400-meter drop down to the river and reflect on the journey completed.

If your accommodation is located in the Verdon area (Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, La Palud-sur-Verdon, Les Salles-sur-Verdon, Bauduen, etc.) and you wish to reduce travel time, feel free to contact us. We offer canyoning descents across the PACA region depending on water levels and conditions.
